I Dream of Twilight modblog
Magical Mystery Cure Thoughts!

(Warning: Lots of text!)

Let me just say I loved today’s episode. It very much had the heart, the lighthearted fun, and the feels that the show usually gives us. And everything was just done impressively, I have to say the best song out of the multiple ones there were was the one where Twilight was on her bed singing in a sad tone. Though all the other songs were pretty good too. I think the best part is how this episode had so much continuity. What though the images that we see in the Main 6’s eyes. And I have to say I really loved the scene where it seemed that Twilight we sent to some astral plain to talk with Celestia while flashbacks of Twilight’s life played. I just have so much to love about this episode that I doubt I’ll be able to say everything about it that I liked until I’ve seen the episode multiple times.

And yes, I’ve always been supportive of the idea of Alicorn Twilight ever since the rumors started in Early Season 3. And this episode didn’t change that. Even if it was a bit of a cop-out that Twilight flied at the very end. But that’s my only complaint. Though I won’t rage about it, this just means I won’t get the Rainbow Dash and/or Fluttershy teaches Twilight to fly episode I would of liked to see in Season 4. Though I imagine they might of handwaved it that Twilight learned to fly during the season break even if that ending didn’t happen. I am excited as ever for Season 4. I still believe this will be divisive episode within the fanbase, but I think they overall did it great. The musical approach definitely helped with the pacing, without those songs, the episode would feel much more rushed. But I loved Magical Mystery Cure, I definitely want to see it again so I can properly see all the details that will probably help me put this episode among my favorite episodes. I believed in M.A. Larson, and he didn’t disappoint.

I’m now going to start listing off why I wholeheartedly support the idea of Alicorn Twilight. Some of it is personal, and kinda informs you on how I watch the show but I want to start explaining a bit on why Twilight is my favorite pony that will never be matched.

Exactly two years ago, I would never of thought I would be like a character as to so much do what I’m doing now. And definitely not from an unexpected source like a My Little Pony show. But a little later in Feburary of 2011. I found out about the show. Got bored, and decided to check it out for the heck of it. Within the first moments of the first episode, I found myself intrigued by the purple Unicorn we all know and love. I don’t remember what exactly drew me to her, it might of even been a combination of things. Her design? Her voice? etc? All I’m sure about is that it was seeing Twilight after the exposition of the Nightmare moon legend was told.

From there, it just got more interesting as more of the pilot introduced us to Twilight’s character. Being that the mindset for all people who are new to this show at this point knowing this is coming from My Little Pony. It’s surprising to see the first pony you see not a happy-go-lucky, and stopping whenever she meets another Pony asking to be friends. Twilight wasn’t like that at all, you would of expected they’d introduce a character like Pinkie first. But instead they start off with a much more skeptical, and less social character that ignores other Ponies in favor of something they deem much more important. This interested me more, because that’s when I began to see a few similarities between her and myself. I’m not very social myself, and in school when I wasn’t doing schoolwork. I was either reading a book, or doing something else with my time. Usually the quiet one unless spoken to, or if a discussion came up that I wanted to contribute to. Within the first 5-10 minutes, I found myself relating to the purple Unicorn I was watching on my computer screen.. Her deadpan snarking as she met the other 5 of the Main 6, who I would get to know and love as well was plenty entertaining. And Tara Strong’s voicework just solidified her performance in the first episode. I just had to see more as the first episode ended on a cliffhanger. And the 2nd Episode had more to show, definitely expanding on what the other characters are about as well. Though the moment where Twilight faces with Nightmare Moon is where it got at it’s most awesome. Even if the speech was a bit cheesy. But I can’t say that I wasn’t awestruck when Nightmare Moon was defeated by the elements. Twilight getting temporary glowing eyes included. Now not only was Twilight a character I could relate to, she was a hero.

From there of course I would start watching more. The pilot hooked me, I had to see more of this show. And by early March, nearly 2 years ago. I could consider myself a fan. And I grew much more appreciative of Twilight in following episodes. In Ticket Master and Bridle Gossip she showed more of that deadpan snarking that I love. And in Boast Busters she wowed me with what she did against the Ursa Minor at the end. Though I think it wouldn’t be until Cutie Mark Chronicles that once again my like for Twilight would skyrocket again. Her flashback was and still is one of the most adorable scenes from the show I’ve ever seen. That particular scene made that episode my instant favorite of Season 1, and I still think of it very highly. From beginning to end that flashback was just the longest time I smiled while watching the show at the time. That episode, if it wasn’t already going to be the case basically solidified my choice of Twilight being #1

Going onto Season 2, she was great throughout Return of Harmony. Even having a bit of a sad moment in Part 2. Being hit the hardest by Discord. I felt that even though he was defeated, the stress of seeing her friends be jerks due to Discord’s Magic and more made an impact on Twilight. I’d even say what she went through is why she goes crazy in Lesson Zero. Other then just anxiety for doing something for Celestia, I felt the events of RoH were recent and thus had a bit of a traumatic effect on Twilight. Eventually she’d calm down by the next episode for Luna Eclipsed. But I think Sisterhooves Social, which would be the first time Twilight didn’t appear at all in an episode was her getting a well-deserved break for what she had to do in the past 4 episodes. Season 2 would come and go with a few more moments with Twilight playing some good parts, but there wouldn’t be another moment for Twilight to really shine again until Canterlot Wedding. Much like Magical Mystery Cure, it had a bit of a controversy with the fandom as it was about to introduce two characters that were never mentioned before: Shining Armor and Princess Cadence. Much like AliTwi. there were some saying RUINED FOREVER simply because these two characters were going to be part of the show. But by the time it aired, no only did opinions on them mostly change but it turned out to be a really loved episode. With many awesome Twilight moments and a surprise villain that pretty much no one expected. Once again Twilight had struggles, mainly in Part 1. If Season 1 was Twilight getting used to having friends, Season 2 was Twilight witnessing some of the struggles of Friendship but moving on and making her stronger.

Onto Season 3, where Crystal Empire is actually where we got plenty of foreshadowing of Alicorn Twilight. What with the symbols that showed behind Celestia and Luna, and then Twilight. There was also a planetarium thing in the background that had the Sun, the Moon, and something that looked oddly a lot like Twilight’s cutie mark. Not to mention a mention of a next level of studies. Not to mention after it aired we got word of a True destiny that Twilight got, which got me hyped very much for the rest of the Season. Season 3 after Crystal Empire went well. It had a good streak going with Magic Duel, Sleepless in Ponyville, and Wonderbolt Academy. But other then those 3 and the Season Finale not a lot of WOW episodes.

To really sum it all up, Twilight started as a character I related to and ever gradually became one of my favorite characters in all of fiction. It should be no surprise, that I want anything that adds more to her character, is rewarded, and gets something she deserves after all she’s done that was good for Equestria. And I believe Alicorn Twilight is very justified for many reasons. Which I’ll take the time now to list.

*Twilight is of noble class. I’m sure that the school that she was enrolled in as a Filly didn’t come cheap. I imagine her Parents are set up with Money given that they lived in Canterlot. Probably helps too that her older brother would later marry Cadence who is of course a Princess. And even before then, Cadence was foalsitting Twilight.

*Twilight Sparkle has shown to be very, very, powerful in the series. In Magic Duel it really speaks about how strong Twilight really is in Magic if Trixie had to use a Power-enhancing amulet to beat her. Twilight’s been shown to do amazing tricks from the very beginning of the series. Her magic in Boast Busters is still impressive to this day, and you know she’s only become much stronger in Magic since then.

*It is very believable that Celestia was grooming Twilight for this all along in my honest opinion. There had to be a reason she chose her as her student. And I believe this is at least part of it.

*Twilight has also shown to be a very capable leader in the past being the Element of Magic. Like she kinda screwed up at things like Winter Wrap-Up she was able to find her strengths and helped Ponyville finishing Winter faster then they usually did. And in Season 3 she had to make a tough decision regarding the Pinkie Pie clones, and she had to use her wits instead of her Magic to defeat Trixie. Something that a leader might very well need.

*Not sure if I noted this already, but just to make sure. Twilight’s life was basically surrounded by the other Alicorns. Pre-Cutie Mark she was foalsitted by Cadence, Post-Cutie Mark she was Celestia’s protege, and later down the road she would purify Nightmare Moon back into Princess Luna and also try to help her get back to society. Is it really that much of a stretch when you think about it in that way?

I’m not sure there’s more I can say. But there you have it, at least some of the reasons why I think Alicorn Twilight is legit. I think there’s one more thing I need to address though that I’ll end this off on. There’s a big reason why I think Twilight is best princess, and not just because she’s best pony.

She’s now the only Pony with a very well-known backstory. Ok take Celestia, Luna, and Cadence. They’re all mostly beloved characters in the fandom. But if you take away what the fandom has made for them, what do we know about their backstories if you only paid attention to the show? Nothing much except for the Nightmare Moon incident, Discord’s defeat, and Sombra’s defeat in regards to Celestia and Luna. Is there anything else that we’re told about them? Nada. WHile I like Cadence a lot, she doesn’t get a lot of backstory other then she once foalsitted Twilight. Not very impressive in terms of Princess backstory when all we know is that she foalsitted Twilight (As adorable as those scenes were). But with Twilight, being the main character of the show, we know SO MUCH about her. She has much more personality then all 3 of them combined. Maybe it’s cheating for her to do so since she has a lot more screentime. But nonetheless, based on what we know from Canon. We just know Twilight more, see Twilight more, see Twilight do more important things more, and for the most part we like Twilight more then the other Princesses. We’ve seen her triumph and also fail on her way to her ascension, it will be always funny to think about Twilight who once went insane because she couldn’t get a friendship letter in time would become a Leader of the country. But I don’t mean it as a bad way, like she’s not eventually going to go all Lesson Zero as a Princess and put Equestria in chaos as a result. It’s a mistake that she’s probably really embarrassed about, and wants to make sure never happens again. It also gets into that because she’s still Twilight, she still very much has her flaws and that will occasionally come to bite her a few times while learning how to be a Princess. Giving her wings won’t make her a perfect character automatically.

I think this is where I end it off for now. Sorry if you feel like going tl;dr. with all this. But I felt like that this is something that needed to get off my chest after the episode aired. I will continue to be very optimistic in how this goes. The Season 3 finale hasn’t left me doomsaying, but rather excited for when Season 4 starts. As I’d really like to know what exactly Alicorn Twilight means to the show and what it means for her relationship for her friends. I’m thinking we have some interesting episodes coming up in Season 4. It’s been nearly 2 years since I got into this show, and my love for it has not dwindled in the slightest.

You’ll get to see for yourself what the episode means for Genie Twi soon enough. I’m afraid regular asks are going to be slowed down for a bit in favor of this story thing that I thought about even when Alicorn Twilight was just a rumor.

Also if you think I might give Genie Twi permanent wings. I’m actually not going to do that. Being a shapeshifter she can make her wings appear and disappear at will. So she won’t always have the Wings from now on, but I am open to occasionally showing up again. Much like how sometimes I use the Genie Tail and sometimes I don’t. Genie Twi prefers to stay as herself as much as possible. So even if I really do like Alicorn Twilight, I’m not going to make her have wings all the time. But overall though this blog will try it’s best to try to follow Canon as much as possible. The occasional retcon can happen as a result, but I’m willing to risk it because I can’t wait wait to do more Episode responses once fall comes. I do have some interesting things that will come up pretty soon for the blog. Plus the possibility of a big thing I might start planning out in the Summer, but I can’t promise that I will.

Anyway, this is where I end this off. If you read it all, thanks for taking the time to read all my thoughts. Whether you agree or disagree with my thoughts on the episode we can at least be glad that the fandom didn’t completely blow up as a result. I’m hoping this long break can help us recover a bit from the rather stressful last few weeks the entire fandom’s been through. I bid you all adieu ^^
