The Original Twelve

bronyinabottle

Might as well make them the Eternal 12 at this point ^^

I’m so glad that even in times where there’s concern as well as sadness for fighters that could not return. As Smash 4 has at least one or two characters from both Melee and Brawl that people would of liked back that didn’t. That the Original 12 still stands strong.

It just gives the series so much more tradition that not all fighting games tend to have.

Eh, I would be glad if the piece of crap that is Jigglypuff never returned.

At least Ice Climbers is finally GONE.

It wouldn’t be a good thing if Jigglypuff didn’t come back xP

You may not like her, but if they ever removed her. (Since she’s confirmed for Smash 4, let’s say hypothetically it happened for Smash 5) That’s 4 Gamer generations (Those who grew up with the N64, the Gamecube, the Wii, and the Wii U and/or 3DS) of Jigglypuff users that would be very unhappy. She has her place in Smash Bros. by now, there’s nothing to gain from removing her.

There are people who are upset the Ice Climbers didn’t come back but I’m pretty sure removing Jigglypuff would be far worse. (Because at least there was a legitimate reason for why the Ice Climbers couldn’t make it in, the hardware of the 3DS couldn’t handle the duo mechanic. Ice Climber mains do have the comfort of knowing Sakurai tried to bring them back as hard he could)

Except the fact that both Jigglypuff and Ice Climbers are hated by many people and have been begging for their removal ever since Brawl. I for one will enjoy beating the crap out of Puff, but I take great joy that Ice Climbers are not in anymore.

I hated the fact the Climbers, a game that no one played in 1983, got into Melee and tended to be ‘favorites’ when their mechanics were not that great.

Fans can cry all they want, but at the end of the day Sakurai and his team make the calls about who gets in and who doesn’t. One of the many reasons why I love the fact where he called out that one guy who said “If I beat you in Smash bros I get to help you make Smash 4!” “…Have ever developed a game?” “OOOOOH!”

I’ve seen hate for Jigglypuff (But I’ve also seen plenty of love, Jigglypuff isn’t universally hated).

But not all that much for Ice Climbers. I do agree that they are relatively minor especially in compared to most of what’s gotten in and they are definitely in the lower half of the most meritable inclusions. (And yeah their game was pretty minor). But because they provided something unique to Smash Bros. I’m pretty ok with them being in the series. I’m just ok to the point where the only sadness I really feel is how I feel bad for the people who used Ice Climbers as their mains now that they’re removed though.

Though from what you’re saying it sounds like you think Sakurai removed Ice Climbers because he listened to those who wanted them removed when he really didn’t at all. If the 3DS version could of handled the Ice Climbers’ mechanic, he would of brought them back. But unfortunately due to the limitations of the 3DS version, he just couldn’t. Just like how he had to shrink Pokemon Trainer to just Charizard and make Samus & Zero Suit Samus as well as Zelda & Shiek seperate characters because the 3DS couldn’t handle transformations. The answer he was questioning at the round table also had nothing to do with the guy wanting characters (Or else the question would of been “If I beat you in Smash Bros. can I make sure a character I want is in?”) it was more so about the Gameplay.

Okay, I’ll give you that. The 3DS might not have been able to handle the Ice Climbers. But my problem is that they’re from one game that never got any sequel. Sure, Pit got in brawl and didn’t have a game until Kid Icarus Uprising, but he was enjoyable and fun to play as.

If Ice Climbers got a new game? Then I wouldn’t mind them being in. I dunno.

Duck Hunt at least looks like he plays LIKE them with the duo thing going on though. XD

I think it’s just Sakurai loving to bring in retro reps to focus on all of Nintendo and not just recent games. While there are probably better choices, Sakurai probably had some sort of personal attachment to the Ice Climbers and/or felt like the duo mechanic was a perfect idea to fit them in during Melee’s development. The mechanic strains hardware (If you played Melee and Brawl, if you had 4 Ice Climbers fighting at once. There’s some noticeable slowdown.) the Gamecube and the Wii were just powerful enough to handle them just fine, the 3DS isn’t made from the same stuff though.

Though regarding characters that didn’t get sequels yet are still in Smash 4. There isn’t exactly any new ROB games, or Mr. Game and Watch (Though to be fair, the latter did have the Game & Watch Gallery games during the 90s. And it could be argued Game & Wario is a Game & Watch game even if it’s more so a Wario Ware game.

But to be fair, ROB and Duck Hunt Dog actually represent a peripheral instead of just a game. Gun Men from different NES Zapper games even appear in Duck Hunt Dog’s final smash. And obviously ROB represents himself which might of been influential during the Video game crash. So from that end they’re still much more representative of Nintendo’s history then Ice Climbers ever were.

Still though it’s a shame whenever a unique character is cut in Smash. Ice Climbers fans will just have to feel the same pain that Mewtwo fans did, as well as Snake fans. (And to a somewhat smaller extent, Lucas and Wolf fans as well). I think Ice Climbers will be a strong candidate to return come the next Smash though, if they can return Dr. Mario of all things. I don’t see why they won’t try again for the Ice Climbers. (If Smash Bros. is on both the next handheld and the next home console next time, maybe the next handheld will be powerful enough to handle the Ice Climbers that time around)
