My thoughts on Nintendo's Overall E3 (Though mostly Smash Bros.)

I know this is kinda late. But I’d thought I’d give full feed back on Nintendo’s E3. Prepare for a decently long post since I am a pretty big Nintendo fan :)

Starting off, the stuff made from the Robot Chicken creators were pretty funny to see. And was quite a surprise for it to start off from that and have a few more in between the whole digital event.

But right after is the reveal of the Miis. That started off with an awesome fight between Iwata and Reggie.

Now if you’re not in touch with the Smash Speculation scene. Miis… were kind of a controversial subject. For many reasons, people did not want them for many reasons that were not limited to: Miis not having enough personality, they’re too casual for Smash Bros, the Miis themselves are annoying, all the Hitler or Dickface Miis online, and even the notion that including the Miis would be Smash Bros. Jump the Shark moment. Miis were not very popular, but regardless were known to be quite likely with or without the well-known Sal leak. There were many who were STRONGLY against the notion that Miis be playable in any way in Smash Bros. Even those who were more lukewarm to it may have had big concerns with them. But there were some people who actually did support the Mii, or at least in response to the unfair treatment the Miis got in Speculation. Many were driven to argue against the points people had against the Mii. I was actually one of them for a good amount of time. I made a large post on one of the largest Smash fansites, Smashboards. Where I broke down pretty much most of the arguments against the Miis and made an argument against every one of them.

When the Direct came, some people who opposed Miis or at the very least skeptical that the Miis would make it in. Had something to point to that made some believe that maybe Miis won’t make it in after all. It was the fact the Pilotwings Stage, and the Streetpass Quest stage had their own icon as opposed to a generic Mii symbol. And to a lesser extent the appearance of the Mii in the background of the latter stage. While me and others said that Icons may not matter as much as they have before. It was still used as one of the stronger points against the Mii that people were literally standing behind that one argument to prove that Miis will not be playable after all. But now E3 has come to completely put that away. And as suspected it will be a bit of a controversial subject for quite a while. There will be people out there upset that the Mii was included, especially after the Final Roster is finally known and when some people find some of the favorite characters didn’t make it in. But characters like the Mii, The Wii Fit Trainer, or whatever else they don’t like did get in.. Me personally, I was never a heavy supporter or opposer to the Mii. If I was a supporter my reaction to their reveal would of been more excited. But instead I was more like “I knew it”. I would have been far more surprised if they had not been playable. It was what the opposers were doing that drove me to argue in defense of the Miis. And I’m more then happy to see many of the worst kind got a slice of humble crow-flavored pie sent by the reveal of the Miis. We even have those who weren’t sure about them warming up to the Miis. As the three different types look interesting enough to at least tryout. Heck, those who complained heavily about them being a force in Online no longer have to worry about that because those were confirmed to be only usable online when you’re fighting Friends. You cannot use them at all online when you’re going against someone you don’t know. All-in-all I think the Miis are a deceptively good inclusion because we’ll bring many new people to the Smash series by including the Mii. A lot of us only played Smash for Mario, Pikachu, Link or a combination of some sort. Then we slowly grew to explore the other franchises represented in the game and we became fans of those franchises. Now fans who mainly played the Mii games have a chance to find out more of what Nintendo has to offer and perhaps become like the more longtime fans eventually. It helps that despite what people may think, Miis are a large part of Nintendo’s history. And are probably more Nintendo All-Star then most of the newcomers at this point. They way they helped sell the Wii already makes them much more relevant to Nintendo to any of the 3rd Parties, and they have much bigger history then characters like Rosalina & Greninja. I approve of the Miis inclusion, and I think in time they’ll grow on people as one of the better ideas for sure. Just give people time. Those that are very upset are just running high on emotions right now. And it’s actually quite great that people care so much about Smash Bros. in order to have such ranging emotions whenever a character is revealed. It tells you that Smash Bros. is indeed a big game. And while not all characters people can’t quite get used to some characters (I’m still not a fan of some of the characters included in Melee. Though I think Brawl’s roster is pretty much perfect) all characters get that chance to prove themselves and make their place in Smash. And I say Miis definitely will do so.

On Amiibo… I think I have to really see more. It’s a bit lame that for Smash Bros. all it does is seem to summon a potentially OP version of the character in the game. Shouldn’t there be an option to actually control that said character? It also seems like it’d be a bit unfair of you actually summoned it like that like Iwata did to Reggie in the trailer. But I suppose it’s even if both players have an Amiibo that are about as strong. Still that seems like that should be the option instead. But oh well, maybe having both versions will have that possibility instead. I might get a Sonic figure if there is one though just for the neat models that they are. If there’s one for every Smash character, I doubt I’ll collect them all. I do hear that some of them will not only work for Smash Bros. but other games as well. Like the Mario ones will have some sort of purpose for Mario Kart 8. What that is I don’t know. But let’s wait and see how this goes. I think it still sounds cooler then anything Skylanders was as we have the Gamepad already. Not needing an entire new peripheral (Well except for the 3DS version) just to do it. And we don’t have to do it if we don’t like it. It’s entirely optional. People can do what they want, when they want. Everyone’s ok.

On Yarn Yoshi (Still calling it that just because it’s easier right now). It looks neat as a Yoshi game even if I’m likely not going to own it. Kirby’s Epic Yarn was fine on it’s own. Though the game being far, far too easy (Unless you were going for 100%) and the rewards not being really exciting didn’t leave that good of an impression with me. And the Yoshi game might have more of that. Though you’ll probably be able to actually die in it as opposed to in Yarn Kirby. So hopefully there’s a little more challenge.

On the Captain Toad game… the minigames in Super Mario 3D World are neat. But I’m not entirely interested in an entire game that’s basically just an expansion on that. It’s plenty good for fans of Toad. Though I think considering it comes out the same time as Smash Bros. on the Wii U It’s going to be so overshadowed (Unless of course… Toad is a playable in Smash Bros. after all) especially in retail. It sounds like it’s more of a downloadable game type thing (Though in this age, Retail games are available for Download anyway)

And while I’m not a Zelda fan. The open world Zelda world sounds really cool. And I’m sure many Zelda fans are excited for everything. As well as Hyrule Warriors as well with the many, many, MANY characters playable that we’ll get. (Anyone hoping for King Harkinian? hahaha I’m just kidding… or am I? ;) )

Oh and Mario Maker is neat. Though I could see a lot of Kaizo type levels being made that are super, super difficult. Also cool that there’s both retro and New Super Mario Bros. style. It should be fun.

Splatoon looks really unique for a new shooter and a bit weird but has charm and a nice degree of strategy. This could be a really sleeper hit potentially. While I’m sure the dudebros will probably ignore the game for it’s more kid-friendly (Heck the characters themselves are kids. Kids able to turn into squids at will but still) look compared to Call of Duty. But people who are like that are kinda dumb to begin with. The same type of people who would make fun of Bronies for watching a “Little Girls cartoon”. It’s an exciting new IP and while I’m not so sure I’ll really get the game. It seems neat enough still ^^

And the reveal of Palutena. This was probably one of the most obvious ones. The direct heavily hinted at her. And she was a pretty popular choice. Her video being done like the anime shorts that were released were pretty cool too. Even though some were hoping this was some announcement of a Smash Bros. anime heh. I haven’t played Uprising but I saw an entire let’s play of it. So know quite a bit from it. And it was a neat looking game with neat characters and story. So cool to get some more representation there :) Also so many females in the roster already. Just going by who we have confirmed: Samus/Zero Suit Samus, Zelda/Shiek, Peach, Marth, Female Villager, Rosalina, Palutena, Wii Fit Trainer, and even female Miis. I think all we have missing really is the very first Super Smash Sis, Jigglypuff. And I’m pretty sure we’ll get her back as well (I know Jigglypuffs are a species and that some are indeed Male. And you can argue that Jigglypuff can’t be set at a gender. But really, it’s just easier that way. For me, all Pokemon in Smash besides Jigglypuff are pretty much Male. If you see Jigglypuff in Smash as a really feminine Male Jigglypuff. That’s fine with me. And hopefully you don’t think I mean any offense by gender assumptions of Pokemon.

Oh and while this wasn’t at the Digital Event. Pac-Man’s reveal would be done later today. I first want to say how glad that Pac-Man’s design is based on his appearance in Pac-Man World from about a decade ago as opposed as the Ghostly Adventures design. Looks much better. But nonetheless, it’s great to see that now one of Smash 4’s biggest selling points is going to be that you can have Mario, Sonic, Megaman, Pac-Man all in one game. A game that brings some of the best Nintendo icons also brings together some of the biggest icons of Gaming in general. Sonic, Megaman, Pac-Man are like the perfect trifecta of non-Nintendo characters to be put in Smash Bros. because they all have a degree of History with Nintendo in different ways. Pac-Man was basically one of the first Video Game Mascots ever. And paved the way for much of the characters that we are attached to these days. Megaman was a strong force for the Nintendo in the Late 80’s with the classic Megaman games with really tough difficulty but rewarding gameplay. Sonic having an unusual path to Smash, as Sonic was once Nintendo’s direct competitor during the 90’s. But now Sega has become one of Nintendo’s greatest business friends. Sonic being included in Smash Bros. twice is literally the very symbol of the the two companies buried hatchet. Literally no other 3rd Party can claim the effect they had on Nintendo like these three can. Perhaps the only 3rd Party that can claim a great relation with Nintendo still not in Smash Bros is Bomberman or Simon Belmont. Which are both owned by Konami, the unfortunate thing about that is that Snake is also owned by Konami, and if Konami is involved at all. Then Snake’s likely going to be that spot or no one whatsoever will get in from Konami. And even if you remove Snake for another of Konami’s greats. You still don’t have happy people because there are people who liked Snake’s inclusion (Heck I’d prefer he’d return myself, it would be kinda sad if Konami just got completely skipped entirely. So if Simon or Bomberman replaced him that’d be alright I suppose but unlikely at this point. Considering Bomberman hasn’t had a new game since a downloadable game on the PS Network and Xbox Live. And I’m not too aware of how the Castlevania franchise is doing). None of the 3rd Party characters confirmed for Smash 4 would have ever made it without Snake. So it’ll be bittersweet if indeed Snake can’t make it. But 4 3rd Party characters just doesn’t seem likely at this point, I’d like to be wrong however.

Oh and one thing that is really interesting is what we have of the Custom Movesets. We got an example of Mario’s where each of his special are interchangeable with a different way of changing it up. Such as making his fireballs come out faster with longer range but less damage, or a really large strong fireball but shorter range and slow. And there’s 3 combinations of of each Special Move that I assume all the rest of the fighters will also receive. That’s at least 16 specials to pick and choose from, and 48 different combinations for each fighter. We have a total of 33 characters (35 if you count the three different Mii fighters as separate characters). That’s a grand total of 1,584-1,680 combinations already for character combinations. And I hardly think we’re done with characters. I suspect by the time the full roster is known, we’ll have more then 2,000 combinations to cover. Giving more replay value then any Smash Game, or even the most replay value in one fighting game period. Considering all Smash Games already have the replay value that many people have still been playing for decades even in the N64 game and especially Melee. Smash 4 has the potential to have quite a long replay value. Where we may not even know everything by the time a Smash 5 is in development. Some characters have trouble against another for whatever reason? See if changing the special moves a notch to see if the match gets a little more interesting. This really is a revolutionary change for the Smash series. And it makes me excited for what all these different combinations could do. It really could be the thing that makes the game stand on it’s own for both versions of the game. For me each of the Smash games get better and better with each installment. Though I had no idea what Smash 4 would be doing to make it stand above Brawl. But I know now that it has it: Custom Movesets alone should make this game so much better to fight with then in Brawl. The focus on a gameplay mechanic of this magnitude far exceeds the story mode that was Brawl’s biggest feature. and has me hyped as heck for this game. I can’t wait until October and the Holiday Season :)

Anyway, I think Smash 4 is really shaping up to be amazing. The only thing I’m bummed about is it seems the 3DS version got delayed by a bit. In the direct we were given Summer 2014 as the window for release. But now in E3 it’s listed as October 3rd. Which while it’s not long after the end of Summer officially. It’s really more early fall. I figured the Wii U version was going to be the big holiday title of this year. So that being the new window doesn’t surprise me in the slightest. Guess I was just a bit too optimistic hoping for a July or August release (I had a dream that ti would be released in early September too. I would of taken that too cause that’s near my birthday~). I also was kinda expecting there’d be more then just the three Newcomers we got. Like at least a veteran or two. (Since we got quite a bit of veterans for the initial reveal) but then again I guess with the game still having about 4 months till’ release. We’ll have plenty of time for reveals before then. Probably one last Newcomer reveal in August. Maybe even a 2nd Smash Bros. specific direct as well~
