SURF AND/OR TURF THOUGHTS

I’ll say right away that I really liked this episode. It’s the first one of the season I had a good degree of hype for, and it didn’t disappoint.

First of all, about time Twilight took some initiative and went to the location the map was calling ponies to despite not exactly being the one called. Just because she wasn’t called doesn’t mean she couldn’t have at least helped, Twilight isn’t the princess of friendship-but-only-when-the-map-wants-you-to she is the Princess of Friendship as a whole and should be taking at least some of these tasks by assisting her friends anyway she can instead of just being bored at the Castle like she was in Season 5 and I think some of 6 as well.

But anyway, a big reason of course that I was excited for this episode does kinda stem from how I don’t think we got nearly enough time with the sea ponies in the MLP movie and was glad we’d at least get one episode expanding on them a little more. It doesn’t entirely erase the disappointment of how short the scene turned out to be in the movie, but it’s good to see it show up in the show and even get the chance to show sea pony forms for other recurring characters.

The plot is also an interesting one because it reminded many of someone in a divorced parents situation.Albeit this is kind of the best case scenario version of divorce if it is meant to be that. Both location aren’t really that far from another, the two parents aren’t mad at each other and don’t mind seeing each other again from time to time. And both of them are really good to Terramar. It’s a very optimistic version of divorce that probably isn’t the most realistic in the world. but there are situations where two parents even after having a kid just fell out of favor in terms of romance and want to simply be friends but still support their child/children anyway they can. It’s something certainly some will relate if they’re dealing with it

Anyway, Sweetie Belle and Scootaloo take sides on which one the Terramar should pick. And while Sweetie’s fondness for Harmonizing Heights is adorable and makes sense for the singer, not to mention the little sister of a fashion pony to prefer the place with beautiful sights, birds singing harmonious chirps, and the wind blowing through the mane. I gotta say between the two I’d side with Scootaloo. Scoots even has a more personal reason for preferring Sequestria. Recall that it’s been heavily implied Scootaloo is kind of a disabled pegasus. She’s ben unable to fly pass buzzing/hovering for a few seconds in the air and has shown no signs of real improvement. However, when underwater as a sea pony (I swear if anyone asks why Scootaloo didn’t discover this earlier. A quick reminder that horses aren’t quite the swimmers that fish are. Those tails make a huge difference on how fast you can swim compared to four hooves flailing underwater. It’s also how the Mane 6 were able to keep up with the sea ponies during the song and everything. If they had kept those bubbles they couldn’t nearly do the dynamic stuff they did during that sequence) she can basically fly indefinitely. Hence the “Just like flying” line she makes. It’s just so cute if a little of a sad background hidden behind it to see Scootaloo so happy about being a Sea Pony.. So I definitely found myself preferring Scootaloo’s argument. Sweetie’s still my favorite of the 3 CMC, but she seemed a little selfish being the first one to complain when Scootaloo didn’t really say anything about Harmonizing Heights until after Sweetie started trying to push Terramar back to her preferred place.

On a side note, Twilight was pretty darn adorable participating in all the events the Hippogriffs/Sea Ponies offer her to join. It was funny to hear she even wanted to try the screeching contest, would of loved to actually see how that went. But eh I imagine that’s not something everyone wants their ears to get full of heh.

All in all just a really good episode, and my current favorite of the season thus far. I think it may stay that way for at least a little while since I’m not sure there’s that many episodes I’m particularly hyped for like I was for this one. But this was certainly a fun one to get.

Next time we have Celestia involved for another episode, let’s just see how silly she gets
