DANCE MAGIC (EQG SPECIAL 1/3) THOUGHTS

EQG has certainly has had an interesting response especially when it comes to fandom reception. The first was for many salt in the wound in the already drama-filled part of our history after Season 3. The 2nd one which was a lot better started to turn heads with a much more sympathetic Sunset. And while the 3rd one might of not been quite as convincing as Rainbow Rocks was it turned fans like me who just did not like the first movie into wanting to see more just by the introduction of the human world Twilight alone.

The fourth movie then provides an interesting setup for the future where the HuMane 7 are essentially magical girls with their own specific power. While certainly the high school cliches are still kinda a thing, it’s safe to say they’ve at least managed to take it in a direction that had it’s own appeal. So it was going to be interesting what they did next, in what we expected to be yet another movie.

This time though they went with a bit of a different direction though. Instead, just making 3 specials that were each the same length of a regular episode of Friendship is Magic. It’s like EQG got a bit of a mini-series. We don’t know if they were going to follow-up much on what the fourth movie brought, but it was something to wonder about for a while. Now that they’re here, aside from a few uses of the powers used we saw in Legend of Everfree there wasn’t a lot that really followed up on that cliffhanger. Guess that still has to wait a bit to be resolved, but nonetheless we kinda got an interesting look.

While they are all separate episodes, they kinda segue into each other with pretty obvious continuity.

The first of which being Dance Magic, which turns out to be a Rarity episode. The only question would be if EQG Rarity can hold up an episode as much as pony Rarity normally does in most of her solo episodes.

And the answer to that at least in my thoughts is… yes! I gotta say it was a surprise but Dance Magic turned out to be my favorite of the 3 specials. It didn’t feel too far from a fun Rarity episode. And it was nice seeing more of the Crystal Prep girls. I know one of the disappointments people had with Friendship Games is we didn’t quite get that much out of the Crystal Prep girls outside of course Human Twilight. But at least this kinda served to return them, and in a more positive light now that it’s Cadence who’s turning the school away from it’s winning is everything mantra it had under Principal Cinch.

Other fun things about the special was some of the others of the HuMane 7 thinking of alternate ideas for the videos which were just imagine spots of what they’d want to do even if they weren’t exactly music video material. Pinkie’s even went in the style of a child drawing and everything.

Also the song they produce at the end Dance Magic is up there with some of the catchy tunes the EQG has produced.

But yeah, I was pleasantly surprised by this first EQG special when I first saw it. It does kinda make me think that if they decided to try a full-blown series for EQG it could work especially if it still promised to follow-up on what we got from Legend of Everfree.

But anyway next time is Movie Magic. While I’ll say was probably my least favorite of the 3. But generally it was ok for what it was. But that will have to wait for next week. Seeya!
