Maud’s surely become not just a fan favorite but seemingly a staff favorite. She’s had a decent amount of appearances in every season since her debut in Season 4. Though now that we’ve seen Pinkie’s entire family now there has been some earning to see more of Marble or even just a little more of Limestone then Maud since there’s been a bit of an over-saturation of her at least compared to them (At the very least both Marble and Limestone are in the opening scene). That said not too much trouble with Maud myself, there’s probably still been less Maud overall then episodes taking place in Manehattan even if there was that one Maud episode that also happened to take place in Manehattan.
But in this episode she considers moving to Ponyville, and to no one’s surprise does decide to stay, so she may have made an upgrade to an occasional background recurring character that may have a small line in some episodes including ones not essentially about her or the Pie family like how she got to lay a burn on Discord in Make New Friends But Keep Discord.. Maud’s dry humor is pretty much a treat wherever it is.
Also as a bit of a surprise it turns out Starlight is heavily involved in this episode as the friend Maud makes. It’s certainly making ti seem like Starlight has much more of a major role even in the slice of life episodes this season compared to last season. Though with only a few episodes in it’s hard to say that yet. But if this pace continues she’ll surely be a huge part of this season. Which I won’t know how to feel about that. But just in case it’s a little overreactionary to think that right now I won’t talk about it just yet.
Back to the episode at hand it turns out Maud helped out Starlight when she was still evil by pointing to a powerful stone that can help her store the cutie marks of an entire village. Which I can’t tell if it’s funny, or actually kind of disturbing.
One thing I certainly gotta mention about this episode is that this may be one of Pinkie’s more divisive portrayal episodes. Where even if you like Pinkie about halfway through you can get a bit tired of her excitement for Maud and the potential friendship between her and Starlight. We understand that’s just how excited she gets about her big sister moving into the same town and everything. But it’s easy to say this is one episode she probably could of dialed it back a bit. Also if not for Maud knowing how weak the ceiling was Pinkie would of trapped Maud and Starlight in an attempt to make them bond which in any stretch of the imagination doesn’t sound like a good idea at all.
But anyway it’s still a pretty good Maud-involved episode. If you easily tire of Pinkie’s shenanigans it’s probably not an episode you’ll like as much but the heart is still there as Pinkie’s just yet again showing her excitement and support in a way she doesn’t realize is too much for her sister and Starlight.
The next episode is a Fluttershy one. Which I’ve actually already seen thanks to the Canadian Treehouse leaks. I’ll probably be seeing the episodes through that to catch up faster because by the end of May the first half of Season 7 will be all over. My thoughts and episode responses however will still be generally based on the American release.
