DUNGEONS AND DISCORDS THOUGHTS

Ok so now we’re on to this seasons one (and presumably only, the next few episodes don’t have a hint of Discord whatsoever. And the known titles don’t seem to point to Discord either) Discord episode.

I’ll say right now that I did have a bit of disappointment in the episode. But only because I was probably expecting more craziness then there was. It’s Discord with a simulation of a Dungeons and Dragons role-play. I thought for sure this was going to be as insane and joke-heavy as Make New Friends But Keep Discord was. That said it definitely has some really fun and enjoyable Discord moments and it’s not as awkward to watch as What About Discord was. For what it’s worth it’s an enjoyable Discord episode, I’m just not sure it tops either Three’s a Crowd or the aforementioned Make New Friends But Keep Discord for me. But allow me to talk about some of the joys I did find or at least some notes from the episode.

Opposite Fluttershy was kinda amusing though a bit awkward if you remember that Fluttershy managed to be that mean without being turned opposite through magic (Putting Your Hoof Down)

What’s kinda fun to note about this episode it’s truly the first time the show has focused on just male characters. Every Spike and Discord episode, as well as the one Big Mac episode we had all involved one of the female main characters. Like most of Discord’s episodes either involve him messing with Twilight or his friendship with Fluttershy. Spike’s episodes usually involve Twilight, Rarity, or of course in one case Applejack. And Big Mac’s one episode also counts as an Apple Bloom episode. But now in this episode they get a majority of the screentime with the Mane 6 only there for a few moments to say goodbye as they head to the home of the Yaks and come back briefly. So it’s definitely a first for the show.

A little funny that Discord has a cat-like creature in the shape and color of Celestia’s Mane. Now if you’re a Dislestia shipper this could either make you squee about implications or kinda creep you out.

A funny thing about the whole Dungeons and Dragons parody is that Hasbro actually owns that franchise too. So in a way this episode could be seen as them advertising both MLP and DnD. Hell, they kinda did with an official T-Shirt, while the Mane 6 didn’t all show up in the episode just to have those costumes (Which is a shame, at least Druid Fluttershy would of been awesome to see). The Rogue Dash we see on the shirt very closely resembles the one in the episode. Pinkie turns out different in that she’s a bard rather then a barbarian like in the shirt. But to be fair a bard makes more sense.

That female pony with the banana cutie mark is certainly going to be a hit with the Rule 34 community. The cutie mark just makes it too easy for them.

I suppose going back a bit to how I said I was a bit disappointed. I guess I was just expecting them to go to the DnD simulation earlier then they did in the episode. Cause by the time they do that there’s only 6-7 minutes of the episode left. Not exactly what I was hoping to find based on the concept of the episode.

But as I said it’s a perfectly serviceable episode of it’s own right. Not an episode I’d recommend most out of Discord episodes but it certainly has a degree of fun and may be more so for the people who do play DnD because of how relatable it is in relation to showing someone who’s never tried it play it. I’ve never played DnD myself as the only role-play I’ve done is plain character role-playing in just being in-character in a chartroom or forum. But the same things could apply even without all the dice. At the very least it’s a unique episode to be sure.

Next episode it’s about another game. Though probably not as interesting for the more nerdy types here because as you can guess, it’s sports related. (But me being a sports fan myself probably won’t mind it as much as others) See you then.
