Big Mac, Big Mac, Big Mac. I’m not repeating the words of the name of a McDonalds Burger. But rather a secondary character of the show that has certainly been a subtle part of the recurring group of characters we’ve come to know. Though aside from an early Season 1 episode, and one particular part of Season 2 (And I don’t mean just Hearts and Hooves Day where he was drunk on a love potion), all Big Mac usually says is either Eyyyyuuuuup or Nope. That certainly changed in last week’s episode though certainly in an unexpected way.
While most of Big Mac’s dialogue is when he’s under his Orchard Blossum persona when he’s crossdressed it probably does help provide some sort of insight to his character that we wouldn’t have imagined otherwise. Our only clues before that Big Mac held a more feminine side to him was mainly how even after the “Want It, Need It” spell wore off he still liked the Smarty Pants doll enough to take it with him back in Lesson Zero. But with this episode, we may actually get a bit of an insight that Big Mac has hidden this side of him for the most part until, thinking that the Sisterhooves Social was only for Mares and Fillies, he’d have to act the part even if it generally wasn’t fooling anypony (Sweetie’s line of “That’s Big Mac in a Dress…” really points this one home). He made a pretty good attempt nonetheless, if it weren’t for his large size maybe he could of fooled at least a little more ponies then he actually did (That poor old stallion though). Considering how quiet Big Mac has been up till’ this point we do have to give him credit that speaking freely like that under that persona was really him giving his all to help out his sister.
It’s also a neat touch that Big Mac and Apple Bloom weren’t disqualified because Mac is a stallion but just for doing behavior no one should do in a race/event like that. It’s certainly more open-minded then a lot of episodes featuring a similar concept in shows of the past have had. So it’s more then welcome here.
On a side note, gotta once again praise the use of continuity with the references to Made in Manehatten. I like it when this show does connections between two episodes that aren’t even two-parters like that. Makes you feel the previous episode had more immediate impact.
I think the best part of the episode though was certainly the ending where Big Mac and Apple Bloom talk under the Sunset. It’s such a sweet moment and Big Mac event talks openly again but this time not under his persona of Orchard Blossom. But actually himself, and they’re very sweet. It’s just another one of those touching moments that really add some good emotional weight to the show. And again we get more insight into Big Mac’s character then perhaps anything we got in the last +100 episodes combined thanks to this. It’s the first time we can properly say Big Mac had an episode for himself I think and it comes in the same season where other characters are being given the spotlight this time. Big Mac deeply cares for his family, and he feels that bit of inferiority when Applejack is doing all the cool stuff together with Apple Bloom and saving Equestria too. Other then Spike, Big Mac is our only recurring main character in the show so it’s neat to get a little more insight to him cause this is a show mainly based around our 6 (Or 9 counting the Cutie Mark Crusaders) female characters. So anybody who’s been wanting to see some character exploration into a male character in this show, this certainly is the episode to see it. ^^
