its-homerj-deactivated20140626 asked: It was implied that you care about world-building too much, when you've mentioned that your biggest problem with Mare-Do-Well is the lack of world-building. Even though for me, I don't actually find it as big of an issue with the episode as you had. Though I'll admit that despite how I still like the episode, I do find it to be kind of dumb at points.
No, I did not say the lack of Worldbuilding was my biggest problem with Mare-Do-Well. I outright said near the end that Mare-Do-Well’s biggest problems had nothing to do with Worldbuilding. The characterization of the Mane 6 was just too far off. Rainbow was TOO egotistic, the rest were too spiteful and come across a bit hypocritical when they’re basically hinting that they’re behind Mare-Do-Well. Characterization is the most important thing about the show. And Mare-Do-Well is one of the few episodes of the show where it gets pretty much no one right.
its-homerj-deactivated20140626 asked: Ok I'm sorry but, it seems to me that after your last response to my question, you sound more and more like those analysts who take the show way too seriously like bronycurious. I actually don't really care all that much about "world-building" because, that's not the show is about. Sure some actual world-building in an episode is nice, but the show's focus is instead on the characters and the situations they go through. And you know what, it's a children's show, so I think you should lighten up.
Wait how did I imply I cared about the Worldbuilding too much? The fact I enjoyed Daring Don’t and Power Ponies (I also enjoyed the Breezie episode as well) enough should be proof enough that I’m not one that gets upset over worldbuilding in the show.
sonicdash asked: Any impressions on the SSB4 game?
I think I already gave much of it in my E3 & Smashfest thoughts. But overall, I just can’t wait until October 3rd. I’m really looking forward to both versions of the game ^^
As for your other ask for what to do til’ then… I don’t know. I’ll probably have at least a few things for Genie Twi. Perhaps something this month and also something next month as well. But I also do have games to keep me busy like Mario Kart 8 and Project M (A mod of Super Smash Bros. Brawl). We’ll have to see how everything goes.
its-homerj-deactivated20140626 asked: Though you know what, personally it doesn't matter to me if something in the show you feel is contrived because, I feel that it's like the equivalent of saying that Daring Do being made real feels out of place in a show that isn't about making references to adventures films and shows. In my opinion, I'd actually give the writers the benefit of the doubt, since for the most part, they know what they're doing. Remember Power Ponies, that was an episode that is also centered on superhero tropes.
I think both Daring Don’t and Power Ponies are different because they’re not in the same place where most of the show was. There’s no point anywhere in the series where Ponyville is like Townsville that needs someone to be saved from danger every few hours or every day. The Mane 6 themselves are technically superheroes, especially in the two-parters. But Ponyville never actually treats them as such all the time. In fact, besides knowing Twilight is a Princess in Season 4. When there isn’t something threatening all of Equestria, they treat the Mane 6 as any normal pony. As a result it feels a bit jarring. Because suddenly Ponyville is obsessed with Superheroes right down to the fan clubs, press attention, and even special commemorations from the Mayor. And yet nowhere else does that happen for the exception of the celebrations after Nightmare Moon, and Discord were defeated. Or Twilight’s coronation. But those being more justified because all of Equestria was saved or it was a special National event. As opposed to one town where for some reason ponies’ lives are in danger at the drop of a dime. Daring Do being real as much as a bit of a conflict it can be, there was actually no indication that she was fictional in the world of Equestria. It was an assumption that was proved false in Daring Don’t. But Daring Do herself still wants to keep the illusion that it’s fictional to most ponies. So to anyone besides the Mane 6’s knowledge, Daring is still fictional even thought she actually is real. And Power Ponies was basically an excuse for the writers to have some fun with some silver-age Comic book silliness. Those who understand how ridiculous the old comics were, will get what Power Ponies was supposed to be. Neither Daring Don’t or Power Ponies do something like making Ponyville into Townsville for only 22 minutes. It’s really only a problem if you’re so invested into the worldbuilding of Equestria. When Mare-Do-Well’s problem had barely anything to do with worldbuilding. Or if it does have worldbuilding, worldbuilding that has barely been mentioned since for the exception of Construction Workers appearing in later episodes, or the dam that broke in the episode coming back in It’s About Time.
its-homerj-deactivated20140626 asked: Actually, nowadays I find that my favorite episode of Season 2 on not just in terms of entertainment, but on a personal level, it would be Sisterhooves Social, in my opinion. Though I would have to respectfully disagree with calling Mare-Do-Well the worst episode of the season. Because I do feel that the episode is overhated on, and that my opinion on it was similar to Mr. Enter, in that despite its issues, I still found the episode entertaining overall.
Sisterhooves Social isn’t a bad choice. It’s certainly a well done episode. And For Whom the Sweetie Belle Toils wouldn’t have the same impact without that episode since Sisterhooves establishes that Sweetie Belle and Rarity do kinda have differences on things.
“And I also would have to respectfully disagree with you on how MMMystery on the Friendship Express should only be considered as a guilty pleasure. Because I really don’t have a big issue with the episode like you did (in which I found that you were one of the few people who had an issue with the episode). Since I actually feel that it was a loving tribute to film history in general, and even typical mystery tropes. I also don’t consider MMMystery on the Friendship Express a guilty pleasure because, I did find that most of the cast including the new additions, and Mane 6 were given plenty of room to deliver hammy performances which I find hilarious. There’s even the fact that unlike most cartoons that involve a mystery, this episode actually gives the audience a chance to solve it on their own, and it wasn’t too obvious with the reveal.”
Do you not understand what guilty pleasure means? It’s an episode I feel is one of the weaker of the seasons. But I enjoyed for the most part anyway. I just hear that MMMystery got flack for half of the Mane 6 eating a part of the cake despite how important the cake was to Pinkie. Or how Twilight was kinda ignorant of Pinkie when she was gathering up clues. I don’t think it’s that bad of an episode myself. It’s probably less guilty pleasure then my other picks. But I also don’t think it’s quite an amazing one. Albeit I did laugh heavily with the old film montages with Pinkie’s imagine spot for the chefs. This is just the closest to a guilty pleasure I could think of for Season 2. Because I generally agree that some of the weaker episodes are weak. Or most of the other episodes I like I feel are legitimately that good.
“And unlike you, I don’t consider the bad episodes of Season 2 to be one of the lowest of lows. In my opinion, I actually consider the bad episodes of Season 1 (Griffon the Brush Off and Boast Busters) to be far worse, like Double Rainboom bad.”
I thought Griffon the Brush-Off was pretty good… up until Gilda shows up. But even then. It basically becomes the average “Old friend is actually meaner then the new friend” episode. Boast Busters I also feel is one of the weaker episodes of Season 1. But at least it led to Magic Duel. And I do love the door scene with Twilight and Spike. Along with Twilight taking care of the Ursa Minor at the end.
“In my opinion, I actually don’t consider Rainbow Dash or Fluttershy to be one of the best characters in the show. Because honestly, Rainbow Dash would be my fifth favorite of the Mane 6 (we get it you’re awesome why not kindly shut up about it), and Fluttershy is my least favorite of the group (despite her character development in Hurricane Fluttershy and to some extent Keep Calm and Flutter On). I wouldn’t even consider her as on of the Top 10 best characters in the show. Though I also forgot to mention Fluttershy’s good character development in Dragonshy as well, sorry about that. Yet even then, I still regard her as my least favorite of the Mane 6.”
I have to say one thing: I can’t really dislike a member of the Mane 6 in whole. I can dislike how they were portrayed sometimes in an episode. But nothing has made me say any of the 6 are the worst out of all of them. Cause for me, it will always be Twilight > the rest of them no matter what. Since then it’s evolved to Twilight > Rainbow > Fluttershy > The Rest. But because certain parts of the show made me love those two more then the others. It was Hurricane Fluttershy that ultimately made me like Fluttershy more then I did before. And it was the combination of seeds planted in mid-Season 2, her portrayal in Hurricane Fluttershy, entirety of Wonderbolts Academy, her being the first to react positively to Twilight’s ascension, and even Daring Don’t and Testing, Testing, 1, 2, 3 that’s pushed me over the edge towards liking Rainbow alot more. I’ve complained about Pinkie sometimes, but episodes like Pinkie Pride remind me why I can’t dislike her. I’m actually not into Rarity episodes as much as others are (For the exception of when Sweetie Belle or Spike is involved) but I still know that a majority of Rarity’s episodes have a good quality to them. And Applejack can be stubborn and doesn’t exactly get the focus she probably deserves in the earlier seasons. But AJ is still a character nice to see sometimes. It’s just how I’ve watched the show that Twilight, Rainbow, and Fluttershy all captured my attention more then the others somehow. I can’t tell for sure what that is. What do they all have in common… wings as of the end of Season 3? Nah, in that case I wouldn’t of like Twilight as much as I did before MMC :)
“And you know what, despite you saying that Mare-Do-Well should be considered one of the worst episodes in the series, I actually am still one of the few people who actually like it. Mainly because, I didn’t feel that Rainbow was out of character in the episode. Also your complaint about how her friends in it were mean-spirited, I’m just shaking my head no on that because, her friends actually did try to talk her out of it, so I’m starting to question if you’ve even seen the entire episode. Also, the other main reason why I didn’t feel that Rainbow’s friends were portrayed in a mean-spirited manner in Mare-Do-Well, is because when you let your ego get to your head, you kind of go off the deep end as a result, and sometimes when talking someone out of it doesn’t work, you would have to slap him/her in the face to get them to wake up to reality, as a last resort.”
I have seen the entire episode. Yes, I know Rainbow was pretty arrogant for much of Season 1. But I feel Mare-Do-Well took it a little too far. Plus the other things like the Rainbow Dash fan club that hasn’t been seen since. And Ponyville suddenly becoming a place where something dangerous happens every day like it’s Townsville all of a sudden. It just pulls alot of contrived stuff to try to make the story work. It would of worked somewhat if this was a show based on Superheroes instead of a slice-of-life show with the occasional adventure. But as it is. It’s just an episode that feels too out of place, and shakes the limits of the Mane 6’s characters too much for it to fit in. And while more entertaining to watch then Looke Before You Sleep. Just didn’t really do too much for me.
its-homerj-deactivated20140626 asked: I also would have to respectfully disagree with you on how you're not a fan of the Zelda franchise. I would be okay with it if you're just not into the games all that much and that's what your opinion is on it, however you should at least admit that the games had a huge impact and influence on our culture, as well as the entire industry. Heck, Robin Williams (a famous comedian) had actually named his daughter after one of the main characters of the franchise.
Whoa, whoa, whoa. I did not say I disliked or even hated the Zelda franchise. What I meant by not a fan is that I’m not as interested in the Zelda games as other Video Game franchises I enjoy. Sorry if I didn’t make that clear enough.
I know this is kinda late. But I’d thought I’d give full feed back on Nintendo’s E3. Prepare for a decently long post since I am a pretty big Nintendo fan :)
I was at Smashfest yesterday ^^
When it goes right down to it. I essentially waited about half an hour to play a game for 2 minutes. But considering it’s a new installment of my favorite video game franchise ever. It was still worth it. I did have my 3DS to keep me occupied until I finally got there. And at least the line wasn’t as long as the horror stories about Smashfest lines being so long that they go outside the store.
When I finally got there, I chose Sonic pretty much immediately. The other 3 players chose Mario, Greninja, and Villager. Our stage was Mushroom Kingdom U. When we started playing I noticed how much I wasn’t quite used to the Classic Controller controls still and am pretty glad that there will be a Gamecube controller option. (Even if I already got my Gamecube control with those Mayflash Gamecube controller adapters.) But anyway, I managed to do fairly well still. Though I can’t even remember how I really got three KOs. I remember most about the match itself is trying to get the Smash Ball. There was times I was close but the Greninja player got it. Though luckily I was not hit by the Final Smash of Greninja. Time ran down and I thought actually that the Greninja player one since I actually didn’t know how much damage I did. Turns out I did well enough to draw a sudden death with the player. And with a single homing attack I managed to win the Match. Making my experience even all the more worth it: I didn’t just wait a half an hour for two-minutes of playing Smash 4 about a half a year early but I was also there to get my first Smash 4 victory~. After that I proceeded to pre-order both versions of the game and waited for my Parents to come back and pick me up while they went to dinner and/or some shopping. 2 minutes is not really enough to give a really big impression on Smash 4. But I can say I’m liking things so far. I love how Sonic looks and he does seem a lot better then he was in Brawl already. The Homing Attack has been buffed really well, and gave me the victory in Sudden Death at the end. What was funny is as Sudden Death began, someone shouted “Kill Sonic!” and then I proceeded to win the match and I don’t know if it was the same guy. But I saw someone in a Luigi outfit tell the person who played Mario “How could you let Mario be beaten by Sonic?” heh heh. >:]
It was short but sweet. Giving me a taste of the game before I have to wait another 5 months for the 3DS version and 6 or more for the Wii U version of which I got to try out today. A 30 minute drive followed by a 30 minute wait in line for a 2 minute match where I win a match in Sudden Death as Sonic in Smash 4? Yeah, totally worth it :)
Also not a surprise. But pretty cool too :)
I know I didn’t react to alot. But some pretty neat stuff came from this anyway. But I have a feeling Nintendo’s part of E3 is far, far from over :)
Whether that was intentional or not doesn’t matter. It’s hilarious either way xD
